Charter and One Economy Partner for Free Internet Service

Charter Communications and One Economy, a global non-profit organization that leverages the power of technology to improve the lives of low-income people, will partner with local community agencies in a pilot program to provide up to 1,000 St. Louis area households with free Internet service, training and affordable technology. Charter will provide approximately $700,000 in high-speed Internet service, modems and digital literacy training over a 24-month period in collaboration with One Economy and local community partner agencies.

VITA Awards Cox Business Services Internet Svcs Contracts

The Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) awarded Cox Business statewide contracts for Internet services in selected speed tiers and zip codes. The contract now provides a vehicle for Cox to provide both Cox Business Internet and Cox Optical Internet to State customers through the VITA ordering process. Cox Business Internet has speeds that range from 2 Mbps/384 kbps to 10 Mbps/2 Mbps, and Cox Optical Internet with speeds that range from 1.5 Mbps to 100 Mbps.

Neutral Tandem Selects Cisco

Neutral Tandem - CiscoNeutral Tandem (www.neutraltandem.com) a provider of tandem interconnection services to wireless, wireline, cable and broadband telephony companies, selected the Cisco (www.cisco.com) ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers to support its new Ethernet exchange service.  Neutral Tandem’s Ethernet eXchange is said to fill a void in the Ethernet market by providing Ethernet service providers a more efficient and simplified method of interconnecting on a many-to-many basis.

Time Warner Launches DOCSIS 3.0 in North Texas

Time Warner Cable launched wideband Internet in North Texas propelled by DOCSIS 3.0. Residential customers can get speeds up to 50 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream for $99.95 per month. In related news, TWC will be offering wideband Internet service to Western New York as of April 5, offering download speeds of up to 50 Mbps.

Cablevision du Nord Deploys Mixed Signals

Mixed Signals MediusMixed Signals’ (www.mixedsignals.com) Sentry and Medius digital content monitoring solutions are being used by Cablevision du Nord, a Canadian cable op. Cablevision is the largest cable operator in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Québec, providing cable TV and high-speed Internet to tens of thousands of subscribers in 50 municipalities throughout the province.

BlackArrow and Fox Trial Advanced Ad System

BlackArrow (www.blackarrow.tv) partnered with Fox Cable Networks to trial the BlackArrow Advanced Advertising System across the VOD content of FX, National Geographic Channel and SPEED. With the BlackArrow system, Fox is testing the ability to deliver addressable advertising to viewers in multiple cable markets. The programmer is using the BlackArrow Sales Suite to customize on-demand campaigns based on factors such as viewer demographics and viewing behaviors, as well as specific content on its three networks.

Comcast and Augusta Deliver Masters in 3D

Comcast and The Augusta National Golf Club announced a partnership to deliver The Masters Tournament in 3D. Consumers with new 3D televisions and 3D-enabled PCs will be able to watch the Masters broadcasts live in 3D from April 7-11. The event marks a series of industry firsts — the first live next-generation 3D broadcast of a major sporting event on TV, the first live simulcast of a next-gen 3D event online, and the industry’s first live multi-camera next-gen 3D production.

MTV Networks Int’l Orders Miranda Viewers

Miranda Technologies (www.miranda.com) reports that MTV Networks International, Amsterdam (MTVNI Amsterdam) has ordered two Kaleido-X multi-viewers and an NVISION 8576 enterprise class router for a system expansion, which will allow playout of up to 75 channels from July 2010.

Bejing Gehua Picks BigBand Edge QAM

Beijing Gehua Cable TV Network (Gehua Cable) picked BigBand’s (www.bigbandnetworks.com) edge QAM BEQ platform to deliver its new interactive HDTV and broadband internet services. Gehua Cable operates the broadcasting and cable TV network as well as reception and transmission of broadcasting and cable TV programs within the Beijing municipal area. The large-scale cable network covers all 18 districts and transmits more than 100 channels to 3.2 million people.

Alcatel-Lucent Selected by ZON Multimedia

Alcatel-Lucent (www.alcatel-lucent.com) was selected by ZON Multimedia in Portugal, to supply the active equipments necessary for the deployment of a GPON-based FTTH architecture that will support the delivery of a range of services such as advanced high-definition television (HDTV) services, VoIP and VOD. ZON Multimedia will leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON platform in new expansion areas and in a network development environment where HFC/FTTH technologies coexist.

Cablevision Announces New PC to TV Media Relay

Cablevision announced the development of a new PC to TV Media Relay, which reportedly will allow digital cable subs to relay whatever information or images currently appear on their computer screen to their TV in real-time, without any additional equipment in the home. The MSO describes it this way: “This innovative service will allow Cablevision customers, with the press of a button, to transfer anything available for display on their PC, whether the information is stored on their PC, transferred from a drive or accessible on the Web, to the television for viewing on a dedicated channel that is accessible only by that customer.” The op says it plans to begin a technical trial of PC to TV Media Relay for the PC by June 2010.

Comcast released a new version of its Comcast Mobile application, which now includes a remote DVR programming service (rDVR) that is being rolled out across the country. With the Comcast Mobile app 2.0, subs can program their DVR “at any time, from anywhere.” Comcast Mobile, the free downloadable app now available for the iPhone or iPod touch, serves as a single access point to some of Comcast’s most popular services including Comcast.net email; visual voice mail, which enables customers to view and select which voice mail messages they want to hear; address book sync; real-time TV listings and trailers of on-demand movies.

Cox Launches All-Digital Ad Distribution System

Cox Media, the advertising services division of Cox Communications, launched an all-digital system for managing ad distribution. Cox Media is the first MSO to provide an enterprise-wide digital media management system to clients. The new system, known as SpotXpress, is part of the company’s efforts to facilitate more efficient services for clients in a rapidly changing advertising environment.

Synacor Platform Enables 9m Subs for Olympics

Synacor (www.synacor.com) reports that its entitlement platform will enable over 9 million subscribers of select multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) to view a wealth of Internet video content at NBCOlympics.com during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, which run through Feb. 28. Fourteen cable operators, all of which are participating NBC Olympics affiliates, will use Synacor solutions to provide their sibs access to “Olympics Online Connect,” where their video subscribers can watch exclusive Olympic Winter Games coverage on NBCOlympics.com.

Cablevision and NBC Announce Olympic Content Offering

ActiveVideo LogoCablevision and NBC Universal announced a multiplatform content offering for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games starting with the Opening Ceremony on Feb.12. Cablevision and NBC Universal are providing Olympics coverage that will include interactive applications powered by ActiveVideo (www.activevideo.com). Cablevision subs have access to all of NBC Universal’s more than 835 hours of Olympics programming, and this reportedly represents the most total hours ever and the most live hours ever for an Olympic Winter Games.
